2016 CFC: An Anti-Trump Bounce?

10/11/2017

Our analysis of pledge results from the 2016 Combined Federal Campaign suggests that many federal donors voted last fall with their campaign pledges – against Donald Trump. Both the Washington Post and Chronicle of Philanthropy reported this finding.
The election, of course, was November 8, 2016.  The CFC was well underway, but federal employees had the rest of November and most of December to pledge, and it appears that certain groups may have benefited from an anti-Trump bounce.

The American Civil Liberties Union led the list of highest gainers, with their pledge total jumping from an estimated $218,700 to $1,090,500 – a gain of almost 400 percent.  Here is a list of the top 10 gainers:

  1. American Civil Liberties Union Foundation
  2. Southern Poverty Law Center
  3. Natural Resources Defense Council
  4. Diabetes Charities of America
  5. NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund
  6. Planned Parenthood Federation of America
  7. Postal Employees Relief Fund
  8. Sierra Club Foundation
  9. National Park Foundation
  10. Women In Military Service For America Memorial Foundation

It is reasonable to argue that seven of the 10 attracted substantially greater support in the 2016 CFC due to the desire of donors to support their work during an upcoming Trump administration.
